Welcome to UNIS Hanoi Grade 2 Blog

Wow! We learned so much in Wider World!

Where to begin?

In this Unit of Inquiry (UOI) our students had a blast exploring and creating maps! They started off by getting a bird’s eye view of our elementary school. Then they went on a fieldtrip to Sofitel Plaza. There the children sketched a bird’s eye view of Hanoi. The students learned about the continents and countries by reading atlases, discovering globes learning how to make and read maps. Take a look at some pictures of our first fieldtrip to SofitelPlaza.

However maps were not the only thing our students learned!

Check out what else they did!

Language Arts

During the ‘Wider World unit the students learned how to recount events. They recounted “Miss Rumphius”, their October holidays, trip to the zoo as well as the exciting adventure of “Chance Island!” In order to write a recount the students must be able to identify the character or people in the story or event, when and where the story or event occurred. Using past-tense verbs and transitional words were also important. They were exposed to many different engaging learning experiences in order to practice this very important skill.

Here are some students from 2KD drafting a recount!

Have a  at  two student recounts from 2DL of the Story “Miss Rumphius” and the October holiday.

Miss Rumphius

Miss Rumphius lived near the see a long time ago. Her name was Alice and people called her Miss Rumphius. She liked spending time with her Granddad. First Alice liked to paint pictures in her Granddad’s workshop. She liked to watch the sailing boats coming to the shore. Next she became a librarian and helped children find books and keep them clean. Later she went to a tropical island and met the Baba Raja. The Baba Raja liked her and gave her a shell. Soon she moved to a house by the sea. She planted some lupines and they came up and she was delighted to see them and when she was on a walk she went up a hill and found some lupines. It was the wind she said and the birds must have helped. Finally she had an idea. She bought some lupine seeds. She scattered the seeds all over the town and made the world more beautiful. I like Miss Rumphius because I would like to make the world more beautiful also. I think it was a great for this year because it was about Biodiversity.

Super Holiday

My family and I went to the hotel in the morning in Vietnam. First we drove to the hotel. It was a long drive there. I liked going in the car. Next the car got there, we got out and we walked to the restaurant. My Mum had a cup of tea. After my Dad, my brother and my sister went to swim but I didn’t because it was too cold. After that we went to our room. We played and then we went to bed. Finally we woke up then we had breakfast. It was yummy! We had our last swim. It wasn’t cold then at 11 o’clock the car came. We drove to our house. I ran so fast up to my bedroom. I liked going to the hotel because there was a dog. My holiday was fantastic!

EAL Class Reflection

In this unit the students worked on recounting stories and events. They practiced using past-tense verbs and transitional words in their recounts. The students in EAL also practiced using prepositions by creating maps and going on a scavenger hunt. Here is what they said…

“I liked making recounts of my holiday because we could use pictures. I was good at drawing maps because I can draw well. I was good at the game nouns all around because I won. I thought spelling was hard because sometimes I didn’t find the words” said Bo.

Su Hyun says “ I like spelling because we can find something we don’t know. I like a recount because we tell our story. I am good at maps I am good at finding spelling and I am good at doing games. And I am good at scavenger hunt. I think writing was hard.”

“ I liked photo story recount because we something on the computer and I liked recounts. I was good at handwriting and I was good at recounts. I liked Verb Volcano and it was challenging” said Alexander.

Math

Over the past six weeks we have seen the students grow in confidence with their application of place value and basic numbers. The students have been learning to estimate the amounts of objects. They practiced identifying odd and even numbers. They skip counted and rounded numbers. They began learning how to read and find coordinates on a map. These skills have been introduced to the students through many engaging games and activities. For example the students learned place value by playing a dice game, The students also created number lines that showcased their knowledge of skip counting,

In 2LN the students applied their counting and place value abilities to Hanoi’s thousandth birthday.

Past Events

UN Day was a hit! The assembly was beautiful and the party was fantastic. Thanks to all the parents who made delicious food from their home county.

We were honored and privileged to have the Secretary General of the United Nations Mr. Ban Ki- Moon at our school. With all of the excitement and short notice of the Secretary General’s visit; the student’s performance was an absolute delight.

ASA 2 begins November 22!

Here are reflections of Wider World by 2NW!

As part of our reflection for the conclusion of this unit, 2NW decided to try using Voicethread. First, we brainstormed and created a rough draft of our ideas. Then we added our ideas by either recording our voices or typing on the computer. You can listen to our reflections at the link below.

2NW Voicethread Reflection

Please Note- The goal of this reflection was to share our thoughts and ideas. Our typing is in rough draft form and was not edited for spelling, capitals or punctuation.

Here are two reflections from 2NW in their entirety.

Wider World Reflection-

My favorite part of this unit was being a continent expert on Antarctica because we got to work in groups and I didn’t know much about Antarctica. I learned that there were only two types of flowering plants found on this whole continent.

During our unit I showed the attitude of RESPECT when Ban Ki-moon came to visit our school by being kind while he was speaking.

I was KNOWLEDGEABLE when we went on the Coordinate Treasure Hunt because I used the map and worked in a group.

I showed CURIOSITY during this unit when I didn’t know where some of the countries were when we tried to find them on the big map.

-By Nozomu

My favorite part of this unit was Chance Island. I enjoyed this because it was fun to create. I learned that we can make maps by ourselves and be creative.

During our unit I showed the attitude of CURIOSITY because I was curious about South America. I wanted to know, was Brazil in South America?

I was KNOWLEDGEABLE on my MAP that I did at the end of the unit. I added the Amazon River. I know a lot about this river.

I was an INQUIRER during this unit when I asked lots of questions in my group about the continent of South America and I found the answer.

What’s next for Grade 2?

Home Sweet Home

Transdisciplinary Theme: How we share the planet

An inquiry into

• rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things

Central Idea

Students will understand that….

• An animal's habitat has an influence on its characteristics (environment, adaptation/camouflage) and behaviors and (eating habits, migration, nocturnal) we have a responsibility to protect it.

Unit Questions

Focusing on the outcomes and skill development above, what key questions will drive these inquiries?

o What is habitat?

o Why do animals live where they live?

o How have they adapted to their environment?

o Why do people need to protect animals?

o What do people do to protect habitats?

Lines of Inquiry

o Classifying habitats and animals.

o The influence a habitat has on an animal’s characteristics and behavior.

o There is a relationship between animals and their habitats.

o The impact humans have on an animals habitat.

o What can be done to protect animals and habitats?

  1. Thanks, Daniel for posting. Great to see how the kids acquire and practice concepts and frameworks that help them to have structured understanding about the World around us and interact with it.
